Depuis 1993, Marcel van Eeden produit chaque jour au moins un dessin au crayon sur papier crème, de format unique. L’Institut Néerlandais présente des œuvres graphiques de cet artiste, né en 1965, et dont la source d’inspiration visuelle remonte exclusivement à des photographies, articles de journaux et autres documents datant d’avant sa propre naissance. Ses dessins intériorisés peuvent être appréhendés comme un désir de l’artiste d’avoir accès à une période qu’il n’a pas vécue. L’unité des dessins et la régularité qui caractérisent le travail de Marcel van Eeden font un ensemble cohérent, un corpus quasi encyclopédique d’événements de la vie d’avant 1965.

So I stood up and went to my locker, fetching my drawings amid more hoots and hollers. I then took them to the hallway where Bledsoe was waiting.
Bledsoe: Is this all of them?
Martinez: Yes, I think so.
He looked at them all over as I unrolled them and laid the drawings flat.

'In artist Ad Reinhardt's cartoon drawing How To Look At Modern Art In America (1946), a crudely sketched figure of a man points at a piece of abstract art on the wall and laughs.

"Ha, ha," says the stick man looking out at the viewer. "What does this represent?"

"What do you represent?" asks the painting right back.

This is an even better question now — at least from the painting's point of view — than it was back in the great art war being fought by Reinhardt, the purest of 1950s abstractionists.'

That was the progression of lessons in "The Art of Drawing," a 19th-century manual published in Paris from 1868 to 1871 by a little-known lithographer and painter, Charles Bargue (1826/27-1883), in collaboration with the overripe academic realist Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). '
