Ferber commented that, purely in terms of time, I was now as far removed from Germany as he had been in 1966; but time, he went on, is an unreliable way of gauging these things, indeed it is nothing but a disquiet of the soul. There is neither a past nor a future. At least, not for me. The fragmentary scenes that haunt my memories are obsessive in character. When I think of Germany, it feels as if there were some kind of insanity lodged in my head. Probably the reason why I have never been to Germany again is that I am afraid to find that this insanity really exists. To me, you see, Germany is a country frozen in the past, destroyed, a curiously extraterritorial place, inhabited by people whose faces are both lovely and dreadful. All of them are dressed in the style of the Thirties, or even earlier fashions, and wearing headgear that does not go with their clothing at all – pilots’ helmets, peaked caps, top hats, ear muffs, crossover headbands, and hand-knitted woollen caps.

...One of the shots resembled, even in detail, a photograph of Nabokov in the mountains above Gastaad that I had clipped from a Swiss magazine a few days before.

Er nahm uns mit auf seine Reisen, er schrieb, wenn er von denen berichtete, die er vorm Vergessenwerden retten wollte, immer auch von sich, wie er da, als könne er einfach nicht anders (wenn er sich selbst vor dem Vergessen schützen wollte), per Bahn, in Autos, zu Fuß, ein bisschen wie in Trance manchmal, durch Länder fuhr, durch Städte ging, durch Landschaften, unter der Fahne einer Schwermut, die immer größer wurde, je mehr er sah, und sich nur bewegte, diese dunkle Fahne, oder nein, dieses abgebrochne schwarze Segel seiner und aller Schwermut, nur noch bewegte wie von den schweren Wellen des Meers der sinnlos Gestorbenen: auf dem eigentlich er also nur noch fuhr.

'Das Bergwerk "Zollverein Schacht XII" wurde ab 1928 in wegweisender Architektur des Funktionalismus von den Architekten Fritz Schupp und Martin Kremmer geplant und realisiert. Mit der Förderung wurde 1932 begonnen. Als letzte Essener Großzeche wurde Zollverein XII 1986 stillgelegt und umgehend unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. '

'Legendary Scottish musician STUART ADAMSON has disappeared in USA. Adamson who has had a long battle with alcoholism has not been seen for over 3 weeks. He left a note for his son saying 'back by noon Sunday' on Wed 7th November. He did not appear but,was known to be in Atlanta when a fellow Scot watched the Ireland v Iran World Cup match with him on 15th November. Despite many calls made by his manager and family Stuart has not been traced. '
